Borealis is a leading provider of innovative solutions in the fields of polyolefins (mainly plastic granulate in the form of pellets), base chemicals and fertilizers. Driven by our ambition to keep discovering and with a passion to create value through innovation, Borealis develops solutions which are addressing global challenges. These include, among other areas, climate (e.g. resource-conserving production), water (e.g. safeguarding of water supply), energy (e.g. securing of energy supply), health (e.g. diagnostic packaging materials), food (e.g. high quality fertilizers), waste & recycling (intelligent reuse and recycling of (plastic) waste). Borealis operates in over 120 countries, mainly in Europe, of which 3 production sites in Belgium: Kallo, Zwijndrecht and Beringen with a total of about 800 employees, and a service center in Mechelen. In Kallo, propylene and PP are manufactured. Propane is converted into propylene by means of a dehydrogenation process, which is then used to manufacture PP in the polypropylene factory. Borealis Beringen has two polypropylene (PP) factories and a compounding factory. In Zwijndrecht, Borealis operates a compounding factory for low-density PE (LDPE). Specialty Polymers Antwerp, a joint venture between Borealis and DuPont, manufactures LDPE and is located on the same manufacturing location. The main production units of Borealis Belgium are foil, fiber, wire and cable, injection molding and automotive applications.
